This year, Autocratik and Runeslinger have sallied forth with a fresh collection of RPGaDay prompts to encourage everyone to create something with a tabletop RPG focus. Rather than the questions used in previous years, the 2026 challenge offers a series of single-word prompts.
After reading through them, I realised they presented an excellent opportunity to spend August exploring:
Sanction Resources
That means Resources with a capital R: the characteristics that help define characters and Genre Setups in Sanction. It also means resources with a small r: tools, mechanics, random tables, fragments of settings and anything else that might prove useful at the table.
Well, it makes sense to me.
Prompts of Plenty
The first few posts are already taking the idea in unexpected directions. Discipline has provided an opportunity to consider how Sanction might handle the focus, physical control and martial training of a Kai initiate in a potential Lone Wolf-inspired Genre Setup.
If you have followed me on BlueSky, you’ll know that Flight into Darkness has seen some convention play and worked really well. It also has a nod from Gary Chalk to include some original art, although it’s always going to be the original with the serial numbers filed off.
Stature and Poise have prompted the beginnings of an eccentric theatrical company. Performers must balance professional composure, personal ambitions and the plays they cannot persuade anyone to stage with a remit set by the Master of the Revels to serve the needs of Queen Elizabeth in a running conflict against supernatural forces. That might sound familiar.
Future Fragments
Over coming days (assuming I can maintain the pace) other ideas will unfold. One developing Genre Setup combines live-streaming influencers, audience dependence, campy mystery solving and a lurking near-future threat. Think investigators attempting to uncover something genuinely dangerous while remaining entertaining enough that their followers continue supplying the resources they need to survive.
Some of these posts will be thought experiments. Others may become usable mechanics, random tables or sections of future Genre Setups. A few might grow into something much larger, if feedback suggests they’re worthy of the time and effort. Not everything will find its way into a finished publication, but RPGaDay offers a chance to experiment publicly, follow strange ideas and see which concepts attract enough interest to warrant further development.
